Mary Beth Keane's latest novel Enquire Once more, Aye is a poignant and powerful exploration of what happens when an unexpected tragedy rocks the lives of two neighboring families. It follows Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, who grew up together in a suburban neighborhood in New York. Although their fathers are both NYPD law officers, the ii families really don't take much to practice with i some other. Peter's mother Anne is especially standoffish, and then afterward a few early attempts to brand friends, Kate'south mom gave upward. In spite of that awkwardness, Kate and Peter all the same notice each other and become best friends. This novel just really moved me on so many different levels. I was immediately drawn to the friendship between young Kate and Peter. Keane does such a wonderful task of portraying their human relationship every bit they move from the innocence of childhood to the excitement of falling in dearest for the showtime time. Both characters are so well drawn and everything about the evolving of their relationship but felt so authentic. What happens betwixt the two families would exist considered tragic no matter what, but it was especially heartbreaking to see what it does to these two very likeable children.
I also establish myself incredibly invested in both families, not simply because of Kate and Peter, just because all of the characters in this book feel and so realistic. Everything for them is messy and complicated, merely like existent life.
